Baikal State University celebrates its 94th Birthday on August 11. It was in these summer days in 1930 that the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR issued a decree on the formation of the Irkutsk Institute of Finance and Economics. Later its name changed to the Institute of National Economy, then it became Irkutsk State Economic Academy, then - Academy of Economics and Law, Baikal State University of Economics and Law. Finally, a few years ago it became Baikal State University.
Baikal State University today is a modern university with strong historical traditions. It has become the main platform for training legal, economic and managerial personnel of Eastern Siberia. This is evidenced by the gallery of alumni recently opened within the walls of the university. It is an opportunity to recognize outstanding people, including the leader of Mongolia Yumzhagiin Tsedenbal, General Director of Rostec State Corporation Sergey Chemezov, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Siberian Federal District Anatoly Seryshev, Mayor of Irkutsk Ruslan Bolotov, State Duma deputies, senators, heads of large industrial enterprises.
BSU educational and scientific complex includes secondary vocational education programs, higher education (bachelor's, specialist, master's), postgraduate, doctoral studies, numerous advanced training courses. There are dissertation councils in three areas: economic, legal and technical.
Since 2020, a modern, well-equipped Media Center has been in operation, and the university TV and radio channel has been broadcasting daily round-the-clock on campus and on the Internet. The BSU Media Center is a base for developing practical skills for future journalists and advertisers. Educational programs are conducted by both students and professors of the university, including Rector Viktor Ignatenko.
The Research Center of Domestic History conducts theoretical, fundamental, search and applied scientific research in the field of domestic history, develops new scientific directions, takes an active part in various scientific programs. The book “History of the Ust-Ordyn Buryat Autonomous District” was published, written by the author's team headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Lev Dameshek (head of the center).
Baikal State University has students from China, Mongolia, African and South American countries, from 26 countries of the world.
